One Nation Under God??

Too often religion walks hand in hand with politics.  The United States, as most of the Western Civilization, purports to be a so-called Christian nation.  The US is really the only Westernized country which does so to a degree of annoyance.  In some instances, go to just about any Evangelical, Baptist, or Fundamentalist church you will often find sermons on the pulpit which guide parishioners on who God wants them to vote for.  Voting the wrong way can mark members as unworthy association, keep them from jobs, or any other benefits of being a part of that community.

Whatever happened to Christians purporting Christian values?  The latest crop of Right-wing fascists hiding behind Christ has certainly done the opposite of Christ-like behavior.  When did Christ stand for greed?  Or when did Jesus speak about oppressing the poor, the hungry, the ill, and the homeless?  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, indeed! Politically leaning Ayn Rand sentiments, who by the way was an atheist, are being rallied by those claiming to be devout Christians.

The Tea Party and Far-Right Republicans are notoriously anti-Christ.  Don’t take my word for it, take their words for it:

  • “Our nation needs to stop doing for people what they can and should do for themselves. Self reliance means, if anyone will not work, neither should he eat.” – Michele Bachmann, saying the unemployed should starve.
  • “Don’t try to stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom.” – Mitt Romney, defending banks and kicking people out of their homes.
  • “Don’t blame Wall Street, don’t blame the big banks, if you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself!” – Herman Cain, blaming the unemployed and the poor for not having jobs or not being rich through no fault of their own.

When I grew up in a religion preaching the End Times notion that the False Prophet would be the one who is rallying the banner of the Church while misleading its followers into doing its evil bidding.  The Anti-Christ is not an outsider to the Church, but an insider.

If there is any shame among those of you who call yourselves Christian but prove false to its power, you ought to feel the shame of your hypocrisy.
